Sajid Javid, the Secretary of State for Health, claims that systemic racial bias in healthcare is “totally unacceptable.”

It comes as the Secretary of Health begins an investigation into possible racial and gender bias in medical devices.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid admitted after commissioning a review into racial and gender bias in medical devices that systemic racial bias may be present in health services around the world.

Mr Javid agreed when asked if the commission’s establishment is an admission that our health-care system has “systemic undeclared racial bias.”

“I’m sorry to say, but there may be systemic racial bias in health services around the world,” he told Sky News’ Trevor Phillips on Sunday.

“We saw this quite acutely during the Covid crisis because there are many health disparities in our country, as there are in many countries.”

At the height of the crisis, Black and minority ethnic people made up a third of ICU admissions, he said, which was more than double the population’s representation.

One problem, he said, was with a medical device called an oximeter, which monitors oxygen levels in the blood and “in many cases was giving false readings” due to darker skin tones.

“There are research papers on this already, but no one has done anything about it,” he explained.

“Now, I’m not saying this was done on purpose; I just think it’s a systemic issue with medical devices, and it could extend even further with medical textbooks, for example.”

After research revealed that oximeters, a key piece of equipment used to monitor Covid-19 patients, are less accurate on people with darker skin, the Health Secretary launched the investigation.

According to the leading medical journal The Lancet, data from Public Health England showed that Black, Asian, and minority ethnic people had a disproportionate risk of contracting and dying from Covid-19, which was two to four times higher than the white population of England.

Mr. Javid described it as “completely unacceptable” that even an unintentional bias could result in some people’s health suffering.

But he was adamant that the NHS should be trusted by everyone.

The Health Secretary stated, “I believe we can trust the NHS.”

“But I believe… of course we can, and the NHS has always been there for us.”
