QINGDAO, China, July 20 (Xinhua) — The Shanxi Loongs defeated the Qingdao Eagles 90-79 in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) here on Monday, snapping a five-game losing streak.
Building a 19-6 lead midway through the first quarter, Qingdao was nine points ahead when the quarter expired.
Forward Zhai Yi of Qingdao made two consecutive dunks in the following quarter, but that didn’t dampen the comeback from Shanxi, which cut the deficit to only three points by the end of the first half.
The Loongs enhanced their defense and took the lead instead in the third quarter. Ren Junwei took center stage and scored 10 points in the last period to seal Shanxi’s victory.
Ren got a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds for Shanxi, Yan Pengfei collected 14 points, while Zhang Hanjun and Ge Zhaobao each contributed 12 points.
Jiao Hailong took a team-high 14 points for Qingdao, Xu Jiahan had 12 points, and Liu Chuanxing notched 10 points and 15 rebounds.
“We had a good beginning, but didn’t cope with the opponents’ new defense system well in the second and third quarter. The offensive organization was too simple as well,” said Wu Qinglong, coach of Qingdao.
“Both the defense and offense were weak in the first quarter, but the players didn’t give up and kept fighting,” said Shanxi coach Wang Fei. Enditem
