Two teenage friends died after plunging 100ft off an isolated waterfall where they had gone to take selfies.

Monique Medeiros, 19, died while paramedics attempted to revive her after Bruna Vellasquez, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene when rescuers arrived.

The pair were killed after falling from the towering waterfall together.

One of the teenagers had slipped as she was walking near the top of the waterfall, prompting the other to help her before losing her balance.

Monique was taken by stretcher to a helicopter which landed nearby so emergency treatment could be carried out.

The teenager was pronounced dead before she reached the hospital.

The women were buried on Monday afternoon in their native Lages in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.

They had posted pictures from the scene of the tragedy moments before it occurred on social media.

Today friends and well-wishers paid tribute to the pair.

Speaking of Bruna, who was due to celebrate her ninteenth birthday on September 28, one friend said: “So pretty and so young.

“Please God comfort the hearts of your family.”

Dmitri Arruda, owner of a hamburger joint where Monique used to work while she was studying to be a nurse, told local media: “She began as a cashier before beginning to work with me in its management.

“I fell ill and she helped me a lot and basically had to run the business alone.”

Friends said the dead women were ‘inseparable’.

The waterfall in Salto Caveiras in the municipality of Lages could only be reached via footpaths and Monique was taken to hospital by helicopter.

Emergency responders who helped in the rescue said the spot where the teenagers lost their lives was off-limits to visitors, but locals often headed to the area because of its natural beauty.
