A woman whose beloved Yorkshire Terrier died in a vicious attack by another dog says she fears a child being mauled next.
Dublin dog owner Helena McEnery’s darling rescue pup Luna sadly passed away after it was set upon by a German Shepherd on Sunday afternoon.
The heartbroken East Wall woman is now afraid to walk her other dogs in case they are also attacked.
She is calling for tougher penalties to be handed down to irresponsible owners.
The Dogs Aid volunteer told Dublin Live her partner Neven was walking Luna at around 2:30pm when the Alsatian ran across the busy road and pounced on the defenceless terrier.
She said: “He was walking down the road with Luna on her lead.
“She was walking along and from the corner of Neven’s eye it was too late by the time he saw the dog.
“The dog was less than a foot away and it was all too late.
“The dog lunged at her. He didn’t hesitate, he didn’t stop for a minute or smell her. He just lunged straight in on top of her and got her in his mouth and pinned her onto the ground.”
Neven managed to restrain the Alsatian and pull it off Luna, who had a puncture wound in her side from the shocking attack.
He then saw the huge dog’s owner walking across the road and couldn’t believe what happened next.
“When Neven looked around after he had already restrained the German Shepherd, he saw the owner coming over,” said Helena.
“The guy just walked over, put his dog on a lead, kicked his dog viciously hard and just walked away.
“People like that shouldn’t own dogs. If he was any sort of decent member of the public he would have passed on a phone number and stayed at the scene for a few minutes and offered help for Luna.”
Luna was raced to an emergency vet who gave her painkillers and antibiotics and said he was hopeful that she would pull through.
Helena said: “When she got home she seemed to be dazed but we just thought that was because of the medication.”
The couple took Luna into their bedroom and set up their beds on the floor so they could stay with her.
“We were just hoping that she was through the worst of it and that now she was home with her family she would be safe and once the medication kicked in she would pull out of it and when she woke up in the morning she would give us a little tail wag and slowly but surely come around from this.”
When Helena woke up at 3:30am on Monday morning, poor Luna had sadly taken a turn for the worse.
The couple raced her to UCD Veterinary Hospital but there was nothing that could be done to save her.
Devastated Helena is now terrified that another of her six dogs, or possibly even a young child, could get attacked due to the negligence of careless dog owners.
“There could be a child crawling around in the park chasing a ball and that dog could run over and go straight for that kid who wouldn’t stand a chance.
“That guy who had that dog needs to be more responsible and he needs to know the devastation that he has caused. It was so unnecessary.
“Even if he didn’t have a muzzle on the dog, he needed a lead. By law he needed to have a lead and a muzzle on that dog.
Under Irish dog regulations, German Shepherds are considered a restricted breed and must be muzzled when in a public place.
They must also be secured on a lead not exceeding a metre in length by a person over the age of 16 who is capable of controlling the dog.
“We’ve been speaking to people in the area and they’re afraid to bring out their dogs now,” said Helena.
“I had my other dogs out yesterday and I felt so uneasy when I was walking by other dogs that a big dog would lunge at them.
“Now I’m terrified that a big dog will kill one of my other dogs.
“There needs to be tougher laws for people who are negligent when they have these types of vicious dogs in their care. There needs to be punishment for that.
“We loved Luna. She loved her little walks, she was an innocent little dog.
“She was a great little character. She loved her family and loved being around us and sitting us in the evenings watching telly. She went everywhere with us.”
A garda spokesman told Dublin Live they are investigating the attack on Luna.
