It’s a weird time for comedy. The likes of Little Britain, The League of Gentlemen, and The Mighty Boosh have all been pulled from streaming services over the issue of blackface, despite being fairly recent shows that should know better. Now people are saying the same has happened to The Inbetweeners, even though that’s clearly not the case.
Last night The Inbetweeners YouTube channel was wiped, claiming that there were no videos available on the channel. This morning the channel has disappeared completely, and it’s set Twitter off into an outrage – with people stoking the issues around the recent Black Lives Matter protests and insisting we’re now too soft to handle anything remotely offensive. Probably a fair few bots in the mix too, knowing the internet.
Except The Inbetweeners is still available on All 4 and Britbox, and whatever has happened on the YouTube channel has not come with an official announcement from Channel 4. You know, the company that put the series on the air in the first place and presumably holds all the rights. And it’s literally present on the Britbox homepage (twice) to try and get you to sign up.
So if someone is trying to purge The Inbetweeners from the internet, they’re doing a worse job than Jay’s attempts to convince people he’s ever had sex.
[Update: Both Channel 4 and E4 have tweeted out that The Inbetweeners is still going, but without directly acknowledging the idiots that think it isn’t
Stream #TheInbetweeners now on All 4 😂 https://t.co/mPa3bfor51

What happened on YouTube? Who the hell knows, really, but YouTube doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to deleting content with all those automated systems in place. That’s assuming there aren’t any rights issues at play, given the fact it hosted full episodes, or that someone didn’t hit the wrong button by mistake.
[Update #2: YouTube have confirmed that the Inbetweeners channel was deleted by its owner, and not anyone at YouTube or Google. Now the question is why? We could speculate, but it’s up to C4 to come out and tell us.]
But this is the internet, and Twitter is Twitter. People don’t want to use common sense, they’d rather spread around bullshit that makes them feel the way they want to feel.
