Tokyo stocks drop as rising COVID-19 cases in Europe dash sentiment


TOKYO, March 24 (Xinhua) — Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Wednesday, with the benchmark Nikkei stock index extending its losing streak to a fourth day, as rising cases of COVID-19 cases in Europe sparked concerns over the global economic recovery.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 590.40 points, or 2.04 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 28,405.52.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 42.90 points, or 2.18 percent, to finish at 1,928.58.

All industrial categories retreated, with air transportation, mining and marine transportation issues comprising those that declined the most by the close of play. Enditem
