DAR ES SALAAM, July 9 (Xinhua) — Two Tanzanians appeared in court on Thursday charged with illegal possession of 1,378.4 kilograms of cannabis.
The duo, both residents of the country’s northern region of Arusha, appeared before the Arusha Resident Magistrate’s Court, also charged with economic sabotage.
The prosecution told the court that Seuri Kisamu, 34, and Losieku Mollel, 35, were on June 30, 2020, found ferrying 649.5 and 728.9 kilograms of cannabis, respectively.
The duo was charged hardly a week after President John Magufuli had ordered the police chief to transfer and demote at least three police officers for protecting a syndicate growing cannabis in the country’s northern district of Meru in Arusha region.
On Monday, the head of state said he wondered how a team of anti-narcotics from the Drug Control and Enforcement Authority in the capital Dodoma had to travel to Meru in a clampdown on the growers of cannabis while there were law enforcers in the district.
The anti-narcotics team seized at least 143 bags of cannabis weighing 2.5 tonnes, according to Magufuli. Enditem
