Nicola Sturgeon has said that Covid vaccine passports may soon be required to enter cinemas, theaters, and other venues in Scotland as part of plans to dramatically expand the scheme.

The proposals have yet to be decided, according to the First Minister, and the public will have to wait until next Tuesday to find out whether they will be implemented.

She told Holyrood MSPs that any changes would go into effect on December 6, giving businesses more time to prepare.

The Scottish Government will also publish an evidence paper later this week.

Ms Sturgeon also said that proof of a negative Covid test could be accepted instead of proof of full vaccination, which could be a major change to the vaccine passport scheme.

This would allow people who haven’t been vaccinated against Covid to enter high-risk areas, but only if they could show they weren’t infected with the virus at the time.

“Any changes to the scheme that we decide on will take effect on December 6,” Ms Sturgeon said.

“We decided not to include testing as an alternative to proof of vaccination when the scheme first launched on October 1st, given the pressing need to raise vaccination rates.”

But we said we’d keep an eye on it.

“So, in the coming days, we’ll assess whether, based on current and projected vaccination uptake rates, we’re now in a position to amend the scheme so that, in addition to showing proof of vaccination to gain access to a venue, there will also be the option of showing evidence of a recent negative test result.”

“Many other countries’ certification programs already include this feature.

“Given the current state of the pandemic, we’re also debating whether expanding the scheme to include more settings is justified and prudent.”

I can confirm that indoor cinemas, theaters, and other licensed and hospitality establishments could be included in the scope.”
