Wayne and Coleen Rooney have been accused of turning their hometown of Cheshire into a “footballers’ housing estate.”
The Rooneys’ mansion has an orangery, a cinema, and an indoor pool, which has irritated some residents.
According to reports, Wayne Rooney has angered a local parish council by turning a 40-acre plot into a luxury mansion.
Ollerton with Marthall Parish Council in Cheshire has expressed concerns that part of the county has been transformed into “a footballers’ housing estate,” in an apparent dig at the former England and Manchester United skipper and his wife Coleen.
The Rooneys paid £4.3 million for a 40-acre plot in the market town of Knutsford in 2018.
They had big plans for the land, which used to be a farm, and they wanted to build a three-story mansion with an orangery, cinema, and indoor pool.
It’s now worth around £20 million, according to reports.
Developers are also said to have turned stables into homes and built a football field where an equestrian center was supposed to be.
The council, apparently referring to the development while opposing a separate building project proposed by another resident, has taken a swipe at the Rooneys’ lodgings, according to a Sunday newspaper.
The parish council of Ollerton with Marthall has spoken out against a neighbor’s plan to build a massive shed on the property.
According to The Sun on Sunday, officials believe the structure will be converted into a luxury home after it is built, rather than being used for sheep farming as the applicant claims.
“There has been building on this site for over 10 years, with less than 45 acres of farmable land remaining,” the council reportedly said in response to the application.
There isn’t enough land left to farm or justify such a large barn.”
“We, as a parish council, ask that you stand against this application, to protect the green belt and prevent the conversion of this part of Cheshire into a footballers’ housing estate,” it continued, without naming the Rooneys.
Rooney and representatives from the Ollerton with Marthall Parish Council were contacted for comment.
