Welding work causes massive fire at Beirut’s port: report

BEIRUT, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) — The Lebanese army announced on Thursday that the massive fire that broke out at Beirut’s port comes from a warehouse that contains oil and tire deposits, MTV local TV channel reported.

MTV said that welding work in the warehouse led to the fire.

Civil defense teams are extinguishing the fire while the areas surrounding the port were evacuated.

George Kettaneh, secretary general of the Lebanese Red Cross, ruled out the possibility of any explosions that can be caused by the current fire.

The latest massive fire came a little more than a month after two huge explosions rocked Beirut’s port on Aug. 4, destroying a big part of the Lebanese capital while killing around 190 people and wounding at least 6,000 others. Enditem
