BERLIN, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) — Borussia Monchengladbach lost 2-1 to Wolfsburg to lose their top spot in the Bundesliga standings to RB Leipzig, while Schalke secured a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt to conclude the league’s 15th round of matches on Sunday.
Both Monchengladback and Wolfsburg got stuck in, with many fouls being committed, and Wolfsburg’s Joao Victor created the first chance of the game after hitting the post with just five minutes played.
Wolfsburg grew in confidence and eventually broke the deadlock eight minutes later through Xaver Schlager’s first-time shot.
However, Monchengladbach’s response came quickly, as Alassane Plea’s cross found Breel Embolo who volleyed home the equalizer moments later.
Despite losing their lead, Wolfsburg remained in control but the rhythm of the game was disrupted by persistent fouling.
After the break, Monchengladbach gained a foothold into the game and forced their first clear-cut opportunity as Marcus Thuram’s effort forced Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels into action in the 55th minute.
Wolfsburg then produced a number of chances in quick succession, as Joao Victor’s effort went wide of the far post before Kevin Mbabu’s header rattled the woodwork at the hour mark.
The Wolves remained on the front foot and had a golden chance to grab the winner in the 77th minute, but Josip Brekalo’s effort missed the target.
The hosts’ efforts paid off in injury-time though, as Maximilian Arnold volleyed home a loose ball into the roof of the net to clinch all three points.
With the result, Wolfsburg jump to eighth position, while Monchengladbach slip to second behind new leaders RB Leipzig.
Elsewhere, ten-man Schalke extended Eintracht Frankfurt’s winless run to three games as Benito Rama’s second-half goal was enough to seal their eighth victory of the season. With the win, Schalke stay in fourth place while Frankfurt slump to 12th position.
