Xinjiang smash Shanxi as Groover makes CBA debut (updated)

QINGDAO, China, July 10 (Xinhua) — The Xinjiang Flying Tigers overwhelmed the Shanxi Loongs 104-71 to reap their fourth victory in a row in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) here on Friday.

American John Groover, who played in non-league basketball matches in China before joining Xinjiang, scored nine points, five rebounds as well as four turnovers in 17 minutes in his CBA debut.

Xinjiang launched a 12-4 run after tip-off, as Tang Caiyu and Xiralijan Muhtar each hit a three-pointer. With more players getting on the scoreboard, the Flying Tigers enlarged the margin to as many as 21 points in the first quarter.

Xinjiang continued extending the advantage to 33 points when the first half ended, although Groover only contributed two rebounds and one assist in five minutes.

Shanxi failed to mount further resistance afterwards, seeing Xinjiang sail to victory.

Six players scored in double digits for Xinjiang, as Zhou Qi contributed 13 points and 18 rebounds, Xiralijan had 17 points, and Qi Lin finished with 13 points.

Tian Guisen grabbed 17 points for Shanxi, Yan Pengfei collected 16 points, and Zhang Zelong added 11 points.

“Our offense was very bad in the first half, as the shooting percentage was low and we had many turnovers. The transition was pretty slow as well,” said Wang Fei, coach of Shanxi.

“Today we had the best defense in this season. Relying on strong defense, we had 15 fast breaks and got 30 points,” said Adiljan, coach of Xinjiang. Enditem
