Carlo Ancelotti has praised new signing James Rodriguez following Everton’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham.
Rodriguez made his debut alongside fellow new signings Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure in midfield.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s 55th-minute headed goal was the difference as the Toffees took the three points.
Keeper Jordan Pickford also played an important role, saving chances from Spurs duo Dele Alli and Matt Doherty.
After the match, Ancelotti said: “This performance gives us more confidence for the future. We showed what we can do. For the players it was important to show what they can do.
“It’s not easy for everyone to prepare for the start of the season. There was not a lot of time. The new signings had one week of training.
“[The new players] adapted really well. The performance was good.

“James Rodriguez brings his ability to control the ball, to do the right passes, to keep the team comfortable with the ball.
“This was important. But it’s only the first match of the season. We have to see what is going on. I think we can compete with this squad in all the competitions.
“We have to fight to reach Europe. The work we have to do is quite clear.”
Everton will play Salford City next in the Carabao Cup. Their next league fixture is against West Brom on Saturday 19th September, a game they will go into high in confidence.
Ancelotti’s target of bringing European football back to Goodison Park could come true if his new signings perform.
James Rodriguez looked bright in attacking midfield, while Doucoure continues to work hard as a box-to-box player.
Calvert-Lewin looks like he will play an important part in their season if he can reach a respectable level of league goals.
