Baker Mayfield on Julius Jones’ Decision

Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns was one of several high-profile athletes who spoke out in support of Oklahoma death row inmate Julius Jones.

Jones was granted clemency on Thursday, just hours before he was set to be executed, after spending nearly 20 years on death row after being sentenced for the 1999 murder of Paul Howell.

Mayfield expressed his displeasure with the news on Twitter.

He wrote, “God is GREAT!!! Thank you to everyone who has prayed and continues to pray!”

Mayfield, along with fellow athletes Russell Westbrook, Trae Young, and Buddy Hield, as well as celebrities Kim Kardashian, Kerry Washington, and Mandy Patinkin, had spoken out in support of Jones.

Last season, Mayfield had Jones’ name embroidered on the back of his helmet.

Mayfield told reporters on Wednesday, via ESPN’s Jake Trotter, “Yeah, that’s pretty rough to be honest with you.”

“It’s not easy to talk about that.”

For a long time, I’ve been trying to get the facts and the truth out there, but it’s difficult to contemplate.

I tried over and over again.

It’s a pity it’s reached this point.

We’ll be there in 24 hours.

So it’s a challenge.

Hopefully, God will intervene, handle the situation correctly, and do what he needs to do.

According to CNN, the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board voted earlier this month to recommend clemency for the 41-year-old Jones. Now that clemency has been granted, Jones’ next step will be to appeal his conviction.
