Boxing Tonight: Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs. Caleb Plant – and more – TV schedule, UK fight time, and undercard
In the four-belt era, only five male fighters have been undisputed champions – Canelo is the overwhelming favorite to become the sixth.
“Boxing Tonight” is I’s weekly preview of Saturday night action in the UK and beyond, complete with information on how to watch and what to watch for.
As Saul “Canelo” Alvarez looks to cap off an incredible year by becoming the undisputed super-middleweight world champion, legacy is the buzzword of the week (see also: Joe Calzaghe below).
Caleb Plant has the opportunity to make history in a division that has never had an undisputed champion in the four-belt era due to the fact that all four titles are on the line.
However, as the overwhelming favorite, Canelo looks set to become only the sixth male fighter to achieve this feat – and it could well be a night that propels him closer to legendary status in the sport.
“This is without a doubt one of the most important fights of my career,” Canelo said.
“I’m overjoyed because that’s exactly what I want for my legacy.”
I’d like to be one of the best, and I’m happy to make my own history.”
To unify the WBC, WBA, and WBO super-middleweight titles, Canelo stopped Avni Yildirim in February and Billy Joe Saunders in May.
Plant’s IBF title, which he has held since early 2019, is now all that stands in his way.
With Plant not hesitating to mention Canelo’s previous misdeeds, the latter is hoping to deliver the same fate to the American as he did to a mouthy Saunders.
“I’m going to have a great time.”
“Just watch,” Canelo said, adding, when asked if he enjoyed teaching Saunders, “so much.”
“It was well-deserved.”
Canelo is a man focused on Saturday’s fight in Las Vegas, but having said earlier this year that he could fight for another seven years, and with Eddie Hearn hinting at a future UK date, the Mexican admitted he would be open to taking the show worldwide.
“I’d like to fight.”
