Cassius Winston’s Q&A: Rookie Season, Michigan State Career, NIL Rule, and Year 2 Prospects

Cassius Winston has a long way to go in the NBA.

With the start of the 2021-22 season just over a month away, the Michigan State product is eager to show what he can do in the pros.

When Winston was at Michigan State, he was unquestionably one of the best guards in the country, winning the Big Ten Player of the Year award in 2019.

The Oklahoma City Thunder selected him with the 53rd pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

The Washington Wizards promptly acquired his draft rights.

Winston received some playing time as a rookie with the Wizards, but it was difficult to find minutes in a backcourt that included Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook, two of the best guards in the game.

Winston has found a place to call home in the nation’s capital, despite his minor role during the 2020-21 season.

He re-signed with the Wizards on a two-way contract in late August.

With the start of the 2021-22 season less than a month away, The Spun spoke with Winston about his expectations for Year 2, what he’s learned so far in the NBA, his thoughts on the NIL rule, and more.

The Spun: You recently signed a two-way deal with the Washington Wizards.

Why did you make that decision?

Cassius Winston: I believe the franchise has been very supportive of me, wanting to give me a chance.

They’ve seen me work hard and do things like that.

Hopefully, that will allow me to get out there and play.

Coming back was an easy decision for me because I love DC and what we’ve got going on.

The Spun: Because of COVID-19, last season was difficult for G-League players.

What do you hope to accomplish in the G-League and with the Wizards’ main roster?

CW: I’m hoping it gives me the opportunity to show what I’m capable of.

I’d like to play in a G-League season and be considered for a spot on the main team.

I need to keep working on my game and assisting the team in winning, whichever team it is.
