Darren Till has never been one to shy away from the limelight – and you can hardly miss the huge tattoo on his left arm.
The UFC fighter – who takes on middleweight rival Robert Whittaker tonight – has a blonde woman inked on his body.
And the figure bears a striking resemblance to fellow fighter Paige VanZant – but in 2015 Till explained its origin.
“No, it’s not, it’s my girl,” Till said when asked if his tattoo was a picture of VanZant after his UFC debut five years ago.
“It was a surprise for her birthday. I don’t know what I was thinking. I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m going to do something different. I’m going to get a tattoo of her face.’
“This is my tattoo. It’s not Paige VanZant. I don’t even know who that is.
“As I’ve told you about my girl, she’s next to none other. So, every time I fight, she fights too. And she gets beat up with me, do you know what I mean?
“So, if she’s p***ing me off, I just go to the gym and let some guys punch me.”
At the time, Till was training in Brazil and had a daughter with the girlfriend who remains on his arm today.
He also has a daughter with his current girlfriend after he returned to train in Liverpool in 2016.
In 2018, Till courted controversy when he said he “didn’t care” about his pregnant girlfriend or his daughter as he prepared for his welterweight title fight against Tyron Woodley.
“I’ve got a girlfriend who’s nearly seven months pregnant,” he said. “I don’t really care. I’ve got a daughter in Brazil right now who I haven’t seen for one year. I don’t really care. I just care about legacy and greatness. That’s what I’m in this for.”
But the fighter later clarified his comments when he said: “Me girlfriend and me daughter, they know what’s what and she was right next to me when I was giving that interview and she was laughing.
“Some people just need to stop trying to be offended. All right, it might have come out as if I don’t give two s**** but right now, it’s all about me until eighth of September.
“I have to be selfish enough. And after the fight, everyone knows, downtime, holidays, going to see me daughter. It’s just people wanting to be offended.
“People just don’t know [what it takes to be an elite fighter]. In five week’s time, all my life’s work will have led up to that one moment. 15 years in the making.
“I couldn’t have got here without being selfish. I’m working so hard and I’ve had bumps in the road and there were many days where I didn’t – there were some days I couldn’t eat – because I just gave me whole life to this fight and now it’s paying off. People just don’t understand how it works, high level fighting.
“They look for any opportunity to be offended. It’s just online trolls who just haven’t got a clue.”
