Gary Neville tips Mason Greenwood to make position change if Man Utd sign Jadon Sancho

Gary Neville feels Mason Greenwood will force his way into the central striker role at Man Utd ahead of teammates Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial – particularly if they sign Jadon Sancho.

The 18-year-old has set tongues wagging at Old Trafford with his recent performances which have earned him a regular starting berth.

Greenwood has already scored 17 goals in all competitions this season, drawing comparisons to club legends Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney who broke through at a similar age.

Asked on Sky Sports whether comparisons with Giggs and Rooney were fair, Neville replied: “I think that comparing him to Martial and Rashford is probably more fair.

“Those two have taken a few years to get to the levels they are now producing. Greenwood is doing it in his first season.

“I think he’s intelligent on the pitch, can do things the other two can’t do, he’s a better finisher and I think he’ll end up taking that no.9 spot in the next 12-18months.

“At the moment it fits for him to be on the right-hand side, but if United were to buy a right-sided player which is what’s been speculated then I can’t see any way in which Mason Greenwood won’t be in the team if he continues to perform at the level he is now.”

Greenwood has leapfrogged Daniel James in the United pecking order to fill the right-hand slot in the front three.

Rashford continues to line up on the left, while Martial is the focal point as lead striker, but Neville feels Greenwood has the perfect attributes to displace Martial.

“I think he [Greenwood]’s the best striker that Man Utd have and will score as many goals as he wants to.

“He just has to keep fit and keep himself grounded and remember what he said, that football comes first.”

Former Man Utd captain Roy Keane added: “I think he [Greenwood]’s made Ole’s job a lot easier.

“You talk about his age but when you hear him speak he’s very mature for his age so he’s given Ole no choice really.

“I always say the players pick the team. He’s given Ole such a headache now that he has to play.

“He’s scoring goals, he’s enjoying it, he’s fit, he’s in the best days of his life.”
