The WNBA has just released some significant playoff news.

The WNBA’s playoff format is about to change.

The WNBA Board of Governors unanimously approved changes to the league’s playoff format and postseason seeding for the 2022 season on Thursday.

The eight teams with the highest winning percentages over the course of the regular season will compete in the WNBA Playoffs beginning next season.

The most significant change in this new format is that no team will receive a bye to begin the playoffs.

Because of the reduction in the number of playoff rounds from four to three, this is the case.

Another change is that single-elimination games are being phased out.

The 2-1 format will be used in the first round, with the higher seed hosting Games 1 and 2 and the lower seed hosting Game 3.

If a third game is required, it will be hosted by the lower seed.

Here’s a visual representation of the new format:

Fortunately for WNBA fans, the league’s playoff format will not be completely altered.

The WNBA semifinals and finals will continue to be best-of-five series with a 2-2-1 format.

Cathy Engelbert, the WNBA commissioner, issued a statement regarding the new changes.

She thinks the new format will make the playoffs even more exciting than they are now.

“Over the last year, we’ve been evaluating different playoff formats, and the new playoff format announced today will enable fans to engage with all of the league’s best teams and top stars right from the start of the postseason, with all eight championship contenders immediately involved in exciting, first-round action,” Engelbert said, according to WNBAcom.
