UFC superstar Khabib Nurmagomedov has spoken for the first time since his father’s death.
The undefeated lightweight champion’s dad and mentor, Abdulmanap, passed away on July 3 aged 57 after contracting Covid-19.
Khabib, 31, has not spoken publicly since that devastating news.
Now he has broken his silence on Instagram with a touching post.
Sharing a picture of him hugging the late Abdulmanap, he wrote: “Father, you will be missed.
“You were a father, friend, brother and coach in one person. You taught me almost everything that I know. I hope you were pleased with me.”
Nurmagomedov began training in Dagestan aged eight under the guidance of his father, who coached several others in their region.
Quran 17:23-24. And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while]with you, say not to them [so much as], “uff,” and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was]small.”
Together they won 16 straight in Russia before Khabib then moved to America to pursue his dream of winning UFC gold.
Despite not being able to corner his son in the US due to visa difficulties, Abdulmanap was a figurehead in the fighter’s training camp, which is split between Dagestan and California.
UFC president Dana White recently declared that Khabib would be back in action before the end of the year.
And he revealed the star looks set to defend his title against Justin Gaethje.
When asked about the showdown, White said: “I don’t know if it will be the first one, but it will be on Fight Island, unless miraculously the world comes back together faster than I think it’s gonna.
“Hopefully it will be done by mid-June, and I could put on a fight that weekend that it’s done or end of June.”
Gaethje claimed the interim title on Saturday with an impressive fifth round stoppage of Tony Ferguson at UFC 249.
Nurmagomedov was originally due to face Ferguson on April 18 in Brooklyn, New York, until the coronavirus outbreak caused that to be postponed.
Gaethje replaced Nurmagomedov as he was stuck in his native Dagestan and is now observing Ramadan until May 23.
