Kid Galahad vs. Kiko Martinez: TV schedule, UK fight time, and undercard, plus more
Galahad’s title was on the line when he struggled to make weight, but he will now face Martinez in Sheffield as scheduled.
“Boxing Tonight” is i’s weekly preview of the Saturday night action in the UK and beyond, complete with information on how to watch and what to watch for.
On the eve of Kid Galahad defending his IBF title against Kiko Martinez, there were serious doubts about his ability to make weight.
Even after removing his clothes on the scales, he weighed 0.1 pound too much and was given two hours to lose weight.
Martinez comfortably made the weight, but it was difficult not to be concerned about a fight with such significant implications for the featherweight division.
Galahad is eyeing a unification bout with Leigh Wood if he defeats the former IBF super-bantamweight champion on Saturday night.
First and foremost, however, the 31-year-old’s first title defense must go off without a hitch.
“Forget about the unification fights for now; it’s all about Kiko Martinez going in there and doing a job on him on Saturday night,” he said.
“I’m not going in there expecting to win.”
He’s made some bad decisions in the past against [Zelfa] Barrett and [Josh] Warrington, so I know he’ll show up and not try to put it in the hands of the judge – that’s exactly what I’m going to do.”
It might not have the same feel as Galahad’s grudge matches, which seem to have defined much of his career thus far – including his only loss, to Warrington in 2019, and an 11th-round knockout of Jazza Dickens in his first fight since the pandemic.
Regardless, Martinez’s history suggests that he will struggle to make the transition.
He has also struggled in the United Kingdom, losing to Carl Frampton twice, Scott Quigg and Warrington, and Rendall Munroe twice.
Martinez’s team will take note of the support for Galahad from the Sheffield crowd.
They’ve always blamed the judges for his poor performance in a country he refers to as his “second home,” but the Spaniard will still be a huge underdog.
The pair fought on the same card the last time they met, but they will now face off in a fight.
