LeBron James is on the cusp of adding another piece of history to his bow as he continues to cement his legacy as one of the NBA’s greatest-ever players.

The Los Angeles Lakers forward is on course to surpass Kobe Bryant on the all-time NBA points list.

James currently sits fourth in the list with 33,643 points – after scoring a further 15 on Monday as the Lakers lost 139-107 at bitter rivals the Boston Celtics.

The 35-year-old trails Lakers legend Bryant by 65 points – a figure he should overtake by the end of this week.

The Lakers are currently on a five-game road trip which began on Saturday at the Houston Rockets. After losing to the Celtics, Frank Vogel’s side travel to the New York Knicks on Wednesday before taking on the Brooklyn Nets 24 hours later. They complete the stand on Saturday at the Philadelphia 76ers.

This season James is averaging 25.2 points per game. On that basis then the weekend’s visit to the Wells Fargo Center at the 76ers is when James should move to third on the all-time NBA points list.

Bryant, who won five NBA titles playing for the Lakers, retired in 2016 with a total of 33,643 points. Only Kareem Abdul-Jabaar (38,387) and Karl Malone (36,928) have scored more points than him and James at present.

Despite the impending likelihood of being usurped, Bryant is happy for James as he recalled the moment he himself overtook Michael Jordan in the standings in 2014.

‘It’s great,’ he said to The Athletic. ‘I think it’s great for him. I mean, the amount of work he’s put in over his career, consistency, I think it’s awesome.

‘That was cool [surpassing Jordan, who texted him congratulations]. Because it’s such a brotherhood, such an amount of respect between us as players, and you know the amount of work and consistency you have to put in over time so it’s nothing but love and respect.’

Jordan, widely considered the sport’s greatest-ever player, currently rounds out the top five all-time NBA points scorers with 32,292.
