Lionel Messi to Inter Milan? Antonio Conte on potential transfer for Barcelona star

Antonio Conte has laughed off reports linking Barcelona’s Lionel Messi with a move to Inter Milan.

The Catalan giants are in a state of turmoil having lost the La Liga title with the six-time Ballon D’Or winner being particularly outspoken on several occasions this year.

It has led to suggestions that the 33-year-old will look to take on a new challenge having spent his entire career at Barcelona.

His father and agent, Jorge, has also moved his business interests to Milan further fuelling speculation.

Inter are known to be long-term admirers but Conte has joked that Messi at the San Siro is not a realistic possibiliy.

“We’re talking about fantasy football, situations that at the moment cannot be linked to Inter. For many reasons,” the Italian told Goal.

“I don’t think there’s a madman in the world who wouldn’t want Messi. But that kind of situation really is very, very, very far from Inter, from what we are doing and what we are trying to build.

“We need to create a solid base, and then maybe… I repeat, this is fantasy football. However, I like the fact that when fantasy football is involved, the team that is linked to it is always Inter.”

The Nerazzurri are eyeing a second place finish in Serie A but may be in dialogue with Barcelona this summer.

Lautaro Martinez, who has scored 19 times for Inter this term, is on the Catalan’s radar.

Messi has already called on his side to make changes following their recent loss to Osasuna which saw them surrender the league title.

Barcelona face Napoli in the Champions League last 16 next month with their star man warning they could be knocked out.

He said: “We are a weak team who can be beaten with enough intensity and enthusiasm.

“We have lost a lot of points which we shouldn’t have done. We have been very inconsistent.

“We need to be self-critical, starting with the players, but also across the entire club. We are Barcelona, and we are obliged to win every game.”
