MANCHESTER UNITED legend Paul Scholes believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to sign a new central defender to cover for Harry Maguire’s lack of pace.
The £75million centre-back showed his limitations against Bournemouth when Junior Stanislas fired the visitors into a shock lead.
Maguire came under fire from supporters after he was nutmegged on the byline before the Bournemouth ace slotted it past David De Gea.
It’s not the first time his pace has been criticised this season and Scholes believes it is a problem that must be resolved if Manchester United are to close the gap on Liverpool and Man City.
And he suggests a new central defender in the mould of Rio Ferdinand and Jaap Stam would be perfect.
He told the BBC: “There is a big gap to close, there’s no doubt about that. The points difference is ridiculous and the quality of Man City obviously is there for everyone to see.
“I really don’t think they are a million miles away. I know we spoke about four or five players but I think it’s two or three now.
“Look, I think Lindelof has done alright but I just think Maguire with his lack of pace at times (can get caught).
“If he’s got a really dominant centre-half next to him like a Rio Ferdinand or Jaap Stam who bullies centre forwards I think that would be a big help to the team.
“I think you are looking at a centre forward, a really classy goal scorer and possibly a centre-half to play next to Maguire.”
United have been linked with a move for Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly who told chiefs he wants to leave the Serie A side.
Napoli would be willing to cash in if they receive an offer in the region of £64million.
But the Red Devils are set to face serious competition from both Manchester City and Liverpool who are eyeing his availability.
