Man Utd urged to rotate Bruno Fernandes as midfielder “isn’t firing”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been urged to consider rotating his midfield amid Bruno Fernandes’ sub-standard form.

The Portuguese star was pivotal in United’s charge to a third-place finish at the end of last season but has failed to hit the same heights so far in this campaign,

United moved to add talented youngster Donny van de Beek to their ranks in the summer transfer window, but the Dutchman is yet to start a Premier League game since his arrival.

Now former Man Utd winger Luke Chadwick feels the time could be right to give Fernandes a breather.

“Signing Van de Beek does allow a little bit of rotation,” Chadwick told CaughtOffside. “Bruno Fernandes isn’t firing as much and it was always going to be tough for him to stay at the same standard as last season.”

Solskjaer’s biggest problem is getting his team to bounce back from the demoralising 6-1 defeat at home to Tottenham prior to the international break.

While Fernandes was hauled off at half-time in that fixture, van de Beek only made it on the field with just over 20 minutes to spare, with United already 5-1 down.

But after showing flashes of brilliance in his previous performances, Chadwick feels van de Beek may now get his chance at Newcastle on Saturday night.

“I can’t imagine they’ve signed a top young player just to sit on the bench all season,” he added. “I think there will be changes made from the last game.

Should van de Beek start for Man Utd against Newcastle? Have your say below.

“Van de Beek is the one you would expect to start this game. You need to find a way of winning games and I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t start.”

United will be forced to make changes anyway given striker Anthony Martial is suspended following his petulant red card against Spurs.

New signing Edinson Cavani is not available to deputise though, opening the door for Odion Ighalo to potentially make a rare start.
