JESSE LINGARD ruined one punter’s longshot bet by waiting until the final minute of the Premier League season to score his first goal.
Manchester United needed to avoid defeat to Leicester on Sunday to secure Champions League football – and Lingard made the result safe in the 98th minute.
Kasper Schmeichel dawdled on a clearance and was caught by the 27-year-old midfielder, who snatched the ball and rolled it into the empty net.
Adding to Bruno Fernandes’ earlier penalty, the finish made it 2-0 to United and guaranteed them third-place.
It was also Lingard’s first goal or assist in the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.
A hugely disappointing year for the Englishman led to only two appearances off the bench since the restart, following a lone goal in both the Europa League and FA Cup.
Not since January 2019 had he been involved in a Premier League goal, laying on an assist in a draw with Burnley.
Furthermore, his previous league strike came in the December 2018 rout of Cardiff – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first game in charge.

One punter ruing the goal, however, was the person behind a bet that has since gone viral on social media.
They had appeared to place a tenner on Lingard failing to bag a goal or assist throughout the whole 2019/20 Premier League campaign.
And their winnings of £670 were agonisingly denied with the final kick of the season.
