Mason Rudolph, Steelers QB, Reacts to Surprising Start vs. Ravens

Ben Roethlisberger tested positive for COVID-19 less than 24 hours before the Pittsburgh Steelers’ game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

As a result, backup quarterback Mason Rudolph was thrust into the starting lineup as the team’s QB1 with no preparation.

Rudolph expressed his displeasure with the unexpected switch-up on Thursday.

According to ESPN, he said, “Finding out last Saturday night right before I went to the hotel, you kind of go through those storms and you’re hardened from it.”

Rudolph threw for 242 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in an overtime tie with the winless Lions, thanks to a game plan tailored for Roethlisberger.

Roethlisberger could play against the Chargers on Sunday, but it’s not a foregone conclusion.

The veteran quarterback must be symptom-free for 48 hours and pass two negative tests separated by 24 hours.

With the possibility that Roethlisberger will be unable to play, Rudolph will be given a full week of practice as a possible starter.

The Steelers will have a game plan tailored to the backup’s preferences in Week 11.

“[Offensive coordinator Matt] Canada asks me a lot,” Rudolph said.

“We put out our favorite plays in the game plan each week.”

This has remained consistent throughout the year.

As a result, they are aware of our preferences.

Some concepts Josh Dobbs prefers to Ben [Roethlisberger], and some concepts Ben prefers to me.

They do an excellent job tailoring that, as they did for me this week.

“I’m at ease with the plan.”

Pittsburgh will kick off against the Chargers in primetime on Sunday night, possibly with Mason Rudolph at quarterback.
