Miles McBride’s Q&A: Knicks Expectations, MSG Experience, Summer League Experience

Because of Tom Thibodeau’s instillation of a defensive-first mentality in his players, the New York Knicks regained prominence this past NBA season.

Thibodeau found a potential two-way playmaker in rookie guard Miles McBride during the offseason.

McBride was a standout for West Virginia as a sophomore, averaging 15.9 points, 4.8 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game.

All-Big 12 honors were bestowed upon him for his contributions on both ends of the floor.

Despite the fact that the NBA season is still a month away, Knicks fans had the opportunity to see what McBride has to offer during the Summer League.

He averaged 15.2 points and 3.5 assists over six games.

McBride’s athleticism, tenacity on defense, and touch from beyond the arc have to impress the Knicks.

All of these qualities will help him succeed at the professional level.

This week, we spoke with Miles McBride about his future with the Knicks, his chemistry with Tom Thibodeau, playing in Madison Square Garden, and much more.

The Spun: How did it feel when you found out you’d be starting your NBA career with the Knicks?

Miles McBride: To be honest, it was just a dream come true.

I’m familiar with Thibs’ [Tom Thibodeau’s] coaching style; it’s similar to that of my high school and college coaches.

I think it’s a great match.

The Spun: When you were drafted, did you think of Thibodeau right away, or did you think about it for a few days?

MM: I believe it’s a mix of the two.

Clearly, I have no idea where I’ll be on draft night.

However, I began to hear Thibodeau advocating for me.

I was like, ‘OK, I need to prepare myself for another coach.’ I don’t need to prepare as much for Thibodeau because I know what role to expect from him, someone who will play defense and understand my role.

The Spun: How did you find the Summer League?

MM: Playing with Quentin Grimes, Jericho Sims, Immanuel Quickley, and Obi Toppin was an incredible experience.

We all seemed to gel quickly, so playing together was a breeze.

It was an honor to play with those guys.
