In Friday’s practice, Hamilton witnessed Bottas’ incredible speed, and he’ll need it to keep Verstappen at bay.

When the lights turn green at the Losail International Circuit for the inaugural Qatar Grand Prix on Sunday, all eyes will be on Lewis Hamilton.

With only three Grands Prix remaining in the 2021 season, Hamilton is 14 points behind championship leader Max Verstappen and starts on pole.

To date, it’s been an epic battle that’s seen a high-speed crash at Silverstone, a slower but no less dramatic collision at Monza, and a barrage of potshots from both teams.

In the middle of it all is defending champion Hamilton, who is aiming for a record eighth world championship, which would put him ahead of F1 legend Michael Schumacher, and Dutch wunderkind Verstappen, who is looking to start his own dynasty.

Recent races have favored Red Bull, but the final three Grands Prix of the year could all go to Mercedes.

Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and then Abu Dhabi all place a premium on raw speed, and Hamilton’s team found the extra splits last time out in Brazil.

Qualifying is at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 20 (live on Sky Sports F1 from 1 p.m. and Sky Sports Main Event from 2 p.m.).

Qatar Grand Prix, 2 p.m. (live on Sky Sports F1 from 12.30 p.m.) on Sunday, November 21.

Existing Sky subscribers can watch the action live on the Sky GO app, while non-subscribers can buy an online-only NOW day pass for £9.98 for 24 hours or £25 per month.

Hamilton and Verstappen were neck-and-neck in Friday’s practice sessions in Qatar, while Valtteri Bottas shone once more.

On Saturday, Mercedes demonstrated its dominance with a crushing pole win for Hamilton, who outpaced Verstappen by nearly half a second to take second place.

It’s unclear whether Bottas, who qualified third, will have a say in the outcome of the race, but Hamilton would welcome some assistance from his departing teammate, who will join Alfa Romeo at the end of the year.

“I was here until midnight last night working with the engineers, who always work so late because they’re such hard workers, and I discovered a lot of areas where I could improve,” says the engineer.
