Schedule, tee times, TV channel, and who could win the DP World Tour Championship in 2021

The DP World Tour will be more closely aligned with the powerful PGA Tour and will be centered on Dubai’s opulence.

The European Tour season comes to an end this week with the DP World Tour Championship 2021 in Dubai, and with it, the tour’s 49-year run comes to an end.

Only one of the six contenders for the European Order of Merit, renamed the Race to Dubai in 2009, plays the majority of his golf on the European Tour, and he is Australian, Min Woo Lee.

Collin Morikawa and Billy Horschel, the leaders in the race, have each played only five stand-alone European Tour events this year, and owe their participation to their success on the PGA Tour, where they are based, in majors and other co-sanctioned events.

Only three of the top ten players on the Race to Dubai are European Tour players, demonstrating the PGA Tour’s economic clout and influence.

The European Tour’s rebranding as the DP World Tour begins next week, increasing the tour’s economic reliance on the Emirate of Dubai.

The pandemic provided a catalyst for the financial imperative for change that had been building for years, forcing European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley to accelerate the shift toward a new partnership with those looking to push their own agenda.

Pelley was heavily courted by the Saudi PIF fund before the new owners of Newcastle United struck a deal with the Greg Norman-led Asian Tour.

Pelley decided that a special relationship with the United States while strengthening the bond with Dubai was the way to go after consulting with the PGA Tour, with whom the new DP World Tour will work more closely.

This can be viewed as part of the region’s larger investment in sport, as well as a massive geopolitical public relations campaign.

Dubai’s more than 25-year association with golf has been critical to its tourism initiatives and the attraction of wealthy foreign property investors.

Other sports have made their own overtures in the area since then.

Before the season concludes in Abu Dhabi next month, Formula One makes its debut in Qatar this week and in Saudi Arabia a fortnight later.
