Sean Payton Makes a Brutally Honest Statement About NFL Referees

Sean Payton, the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, has endured some truly appalling calls from referees over the years.

He’s speaking his mind and slamming the referees in the midst of the ongoing controversy over the application of some penalties.

Payton chastised referees for “over-officiating” taunting on the Dan Patrick Show.

He believes it has gone beyond what he and the NFL Competition Committee discussed at the outset.

Payton stated, “I think it’s being over-officiated…”

“I don’t think any of us who talked about it thought it would end up where it is now.”

This year, the taunting penalty was applied much more strictly than in previous years.

The most recent example of this occurred in the final minutes of the Steelers-Bears game, when a Bears defender was flagged after forcing a critical third-down stop that helped decide the game.

Since that fateful uncalled pass interference call in the 2018 NFC Championship Game, Sean Payton has had a sour relationship with NFL referees.

The no-call sparked a national outcry that even made it to the House of Representatives.

After a failed trial, the NFL changed the rules to allow teams to review pass interference calls.

Something has to give if the taunting penalty controversy isn’t to have a negative impact on games.

Payton, like many of us, can only vent his frustrations.

It’s possible that real change will have to wait until after the season is over.
