The case for playing 5-4-1 and the five best defenders to choose in Fantasy Premier League

Along with Mo Salah, Joao Cancelo, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Reece James are among the top four scorers in FPL.

There are no prizes for guessing who is the Fantasy Premier League’s season-long leading points scorer.

With attacking returns in all but one of his 11 appearances, Mo Salah is pulling away from the pack, with 117 points putting him 50 points ahead of his nearest competitor.

Salah’s position at the top of the table is unsurprising, given a) his track record as a FPL asset and b) the fact that attacking players are more likely than goalkeepers or defenders to score points.

It’s worth noting that, aside from Salah, the next three leading scorers are defenders rather than midfielders or forwards.

Because of their exploits in the final third, Joao Cancelo (67 points), Trent Alexander-Arnold (64) and Reece James (63) are second, third, and fourth in the standings.

Cancelo has four assists to go along with seven clean sheets; Alexander-Arnold has one goal, four assists, and five clean sheets; James has four goals, three assists, and three clean sheets.

That trio has gotten at least one bonus point in 11 of the 12 times they’ve had an attacking return (goal or assist), and they almost always get maximum points.

Cancelo has three bonus points in every game since returning, while Alexander-Arnold has three from four and James has three from five.

When Alexander-Arnold or James did not earn three bonus points, a teammate either scored a hat-trick or was sent off.

Essentially, this means that FPL’s bonus points system favors defenders who score or assist, presumably because it happened far less frequently in the past – statistical outliers like Leighton Baines notwithstanding.

However, with so many Premier League managers encouraging their full-backs or wing-backs to fly forward, the chances of them making an impact in the opponents’ penalty area have greatly increased.

Thomas Tuchel’s recent remarks about the in-form Reece James and Ben Chilwell are an example.

Before the game, he was asked how important the duo is to Chelsea.
