Thirty-year-old Ford Sierra beloved by boy racers to go under the hammer for nearly £100,000

A 33-YEAR-OLD Ford Sierra is expected to go under the hammer for close to a whopping £100,000.

The price tag is SIX times the original cost of the rare RS Cosworth motor.

But auctioneers expect to see frantic bidding for the showroom condition motor beloved by boy racers.

A listing for the 1987 car tells potential buyers: “1987 Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth we are delighted to be offering this RS for auction when consigned with us covering just 70,971 miles the RS500 has been lovingly restored to concourse condition the car would not be out of place as an exhibit in collector car museum.”

Valuers believe the pristine motor will sell for between £80,00 and £85,000.

An £85,000 winning bid with a 12.5 per cent buyer’s premium charge added after the hammer falls would see a total price of £95,625.

The motor will go into an auction held on The Wirral in November by Cheshire auction house Hampson.

One petrol-head told the firm online: “Not worth that much with 70k on the clock!”

But the firm responded with: “Happy to accommodate a bid in for what you think it’s worth we have had fair amount of interest already at the estimate.”

Ford made 12,250 of the cars between 1983 and 1991.

Very few remain in good condition due to the fact that they were beloved by boy racers and car thieves who wrote them off.

Luxury assets expert Jack McDonald said of the 149 mph motors: “It turns out it’s not all glistening Ferrari GTO’s and Porsche 911’s that collectors are seeking from the turbulent and dynamic modern-day classic car market.

“The last decade has seen a spike in demand for speedy sports cars from the 1980s era, and the Ford Sierra Cosworth is a prime example. Here we have an extraordinary classic model that once retailed for a very ordinary price.

“In fact, Autocar estimates that at most there are only a few hundred top condition models remaining, and describe the Cosworth as a ‘rare, capable, fun and practical family car with an exceptional competition history’.

“Even if you don’t purchase it as an investment, this is a car that should be taken out on the road and enjoyed for what it is: a simplistic and practical sports car that is capable of an exhilarating driving performance.”
