A group of researchers belonging to the University of Maryland have detected unusual echoes coming from the center of the Earth.
As reported by Tech Times, the group of scientists discovered a rock structure that is located beneath the Pacific Ocean.
Through the journal Science published the research on which it is described that the structure is a zone of ultra low-speed (ULVZ), which is located beneath the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, close to the South Pacific.
Various groupings scientists have suggested that the recently discovered zone has a size even greater than what is mentioned in the research.
The scientists describe that in this area occurs a geological feature in the area of rocky material, hot, from the boundary of the Core and the Mantle.
This material emerges to the surface of the Earth, forming the volcanic Islands of Hawaii and the Marquise, mainly due to the interference of ULVZ in the area.
Through the study, experts were able to detect various underground structures, measures, primarily through satellites and the analysis of seismic waves originated in this place traveling across the globe.
After the analysis, the researchers conducted the creation of a special algorithm that would allow them to estimate the physical properties of the structure, after assembling an image through a computer to recreate what lies below the surface.
The name given to the algorithm was “the sequencer”, with which they managed to analyze a total of 7,000 recordings of seismic waves originating in the sector of ULVZ, generated by hundreds of earthquakes over 6 degrees occurred in the area.
The registration of earthquakes used was registered between the years 1990 and 2018, which allowed the experts to obtain a complete view of the region located under the Pacific.
According to Doyeon Kim, a scientist and lead author of the research “by observing thousands of “echoes” of the mantle boundary in central at the same time, instead of focusing on a few at the same time, we have gained a totally new perspective”.
The experts conclude that the identified region and that is located on the boundary of the Core and Mantle, it has rock structures, which can produce echoes, and that he had not been able to be perceived before because I had a vision “extensive” of the place.
Within the ULVZ, the researchers found structures in three-dimensional form, place in which are dispersed the majority of waves difractadas captured on the surface of the earth.
Thanks to these structures, a 40% of the echoes emerge from these structures, being the source of the majority of earthquakes occurring over 28 years.
Scientists believe that this type of structures are expanded in the rest of the boundary between the two zones of the Earth, being one of the major cause of the rock formation on the surface.
