Story and setting

As you would expect with a SpongeBob game, the story of Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated is a silly and comical one. Plankton devises a plan to take over all of Bikini Bottom using an army of robots, but he accidentally loses control of them and the robots gain free will. After chasing off their former master, the robots spread throughout the land and began to terrorize the residents of Bikini Bottom. With the situation quickly spiraling out of control, it’s up to SpongeBob and his friends, Patrick and Sandy, to take down the robot menace and restore peace. Along the way, you can expect plenty of jokes and funny moments!

In terms of setting, Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated will take players to large variety of different locations inspired by the iconic SpongeBob TV show. From the lush and verdant Jellyfish Fields to the dark depths of the Mermalair, the game’s levels are as diverse as they are plentiful.

Gameplay design

The gameplay of Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated is primarily centered around a mix of platforming and combat with robots using a slew of different abilities. Players will be challenged by a variety of platforming puzzles that will test their ability to time movements correctly, avoid hazardous obstacles, and more. On top of this, players will also need to take on various different types of robots, and each one poses a unique threat. For example, the Tar-Tar bot bombards you with tartar sauce mortars from afar, while the Ham-mer rushes in close and attempts to smash you with a giant hunk of pork.

To help you destroy the robot forces, you have a number of different abilities at your disposal. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy all have a basic attack, but aside from that, each character varies in terms of what they are capable of. SpongeBob can bash enemies above or below him with a bash or bounce, respectively. Additionally, he can attack distant enemies with a bubble bowling ball. Finally, for targets that require a precise attack, you can use the cruise bubble ability to guide a bubble missile at foes. Next, Patrick can belly flop to stun foes in an area-of-effect, and then he can pick them up and throw them at other enemies to combo. Lastly, Sandy can use her lasso to defeat enemies out of melee range, and she can also use it to swing from Texas-shaped hooks found in levels so that she can close the distance.

In terms of what your objective is, you’ll need to hunt for Golden Spatulas in order to proceed through the game and unlock new areas. Most of the time, you’ll get Golden Spatulas for completing different areas within levels or by finding ones that are hidden throughout playspaces. However, you can also get them by trading in Shiny Objects (a type of item found from destroying objects) to Mr. Krabs or by bringing Patrick’s Socks to him at his house. Patrick’s Socks can be found hidden throughout each area in the game.

Remastered visuals

The main selling point for Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated if you were a fan of the original game are the visuals, which have been completely remastered. The game has been brought up to modern resolutions and has higher quality textures, lighting, shadows, animations, and more. It also looks considerably more saturated in terms of color — some may not like this, but it undeniably makes the game look more vibrant.

Character models have been redesigned from the ground up as well. The vast majority of them are faithful to the original game, while some of them (such as a few of the robots) have some changes made to them. For example, the Arf Dog robot has a glowing eye in the remaster; it did not in the original.

New content

Alongside everything in the original game, Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated is also going to feature some new content. This includes a boss fight with Robo Squidward that was cut from the original, as well as a multiplayer horde mode (online and offline) where you can play with a friend and take on endless waves of robot enemies. In this mode, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and even Gary the Snail have been added as playable characters, too, with each of them featuring their own unique moveset.

Purple Lamp Studios has stated that there is more restored cut content in the game than just the Robo Squidward boss, but we won’t know what it is until the game comes out.
