The company that came up with the original “We’ll plant one tree for every pet picture” pledge has come forward – and it’s not going to plant four million trees.

If you’ve been on Instagram this week, you’ve probably noticed that people have been posting pictures of their pets to their stories, along with a sticker.

“We’ll plant one tree for every pet picture,” the sticker promises, though it’s unclear who “we” is.

Nonetheless, people rarely need an excuse to post photos of their pets on social media, and the sticker was shared more than four million times in just a few days.

The company that made the original pledge has now come forward to say that it will not be planting four million trees.

On Tuesday, Plant A Tree Co. posted on Instagram to explain why it started the campaign in the first place.

It didn’t take long for the company to realize, however, that it had spiraled out of control, according to the report.

“We quickly realized the post would grow too large and that we didn’t have the resources to plant that many trees,” it said.

The sticker, however, continued to be shared, and Plant A Tree Co. said its credit for the sticker was also taken away, making it appear as if Instagram was behind the pledge.

Plant A Tree Co. claims to have planted 6,500 trees and raised over $500,000 (£369,000) for various causes.

By the end of 2021, the goal is to have planted over a million trees.

It also sells necklaces with each purchase resulting in the planting of one tree.

People are being asked to repost their explanations on their pages, as well as for Instagram to re-add the campaign credit.

Even if the original post is deleted, Instagram is thought to be working on making it clearer who made the stickers.

Plant A Tree Company has not stated whether or not it will plant trees.

The company, on the other hand, has started a fundraiser to benefit Trees for the Future.

“We created this fundraiser in order to use this awareness for long-term impact.”

It’s raising money for @treesforthefuture, an organization dedicated to planting trees that we admire,” Plant A Tree Co. said.

People are also pledging to plant in the comments of the post.
