Polar bear devours a duck at San Diego Zoo

This is the shocking moment a polar bear eats a duck which flew into its enclosure at San Diego Zoo.

The remarkable footage shows the bear pouncing on the unsuspecting bird as it sits on the water’s surface.

It comes just a week after a bear at the same zoo was filmed devouring another duck.

It is not clear if the bear from this incident was the same as the one from last week.

California tourist Amy McBride, who was visiting the world-famous zoo with her family three days ago, captured the moment on video.

Her footage showed the duck swimming through the water in the bear’s habitat. Moments later, the predator emerged from the pool beneath the mallard, which realized far too late that it’s about to become a snack.

The bear snatched the bird out of the water as onlookers gasped and groaned in astonishment.

Rather than devour it immediately, the animals played with its prey for a moment, before biting into the bird.

In the wild, polar bears’ most common meal is the ringed seal, according to the San Diego Zoo’s website.

The zoo bears’ diet normally consists of dog kibble, trout and other fish. Cow femur bones and thawed rabbits are offered weekly. Root vegetables and lettuce are provided as treats.

Duck isn’t usually on the menu, but the apex predators will eat just about anything they can catch.

McBride’s three-year-old daughter was mad at the polar bear.

‘He ate the ducky!’ she said in the video.
