Trump says ‘Joe Biden is a dummy’ and mentally weak as he hits back at Democrat’s Iowa speech

President Donald Trump says Joe Biden, 76, has deteriorated mentally and is unfit for office.

Trump slapped back and Biden in a dramatic fashion on Tuesday as he left the White House, in response to the former vice president’s claim that the Republican president is an ‘existential threat’ to democracy in prepared remarks the Democrat’s campaign released early.

‘When a man has to mention my name 76 times in a speech, he’s in trouble. Now, I have to tell you, he’s a different guy.  He looks different than he used to, he acts different then he used to. He’s even slower than he used to be. So I don’t know,’ the U.S. president said. ‘But when he mentions my name that many times I guess I should be complimented.’

The president renewed his attack on the ground in Iowa at a renewable fuel standard event the White House was holding. He claimed America would not be ‘respected’ by other countries, if Biden were at the nation’s helm as president.

‘He was someplace in Iowa today, and he said my name so many times that people couldn’t stand it anymore,’ Trump claimed.

Cupping his ears and nodding his head in disagreement, the president did an impression of Iowa voters who attended Biden’s event, saying,  ‘”No, don’t keep saying it.” ‘

He told reporters in winding remarks on the South Lawn that Biden is a ‘dummy’ and a ‘loser’ who’s ‘weak mentally,’ which will make him easy to beat.

‘I like running against people that are weak mentally,’ he told reporters at a Marine One departure. ‘I think Joe is the weakest up here.’

The president insisted he’d win Iowa in the general election – a state both men are campaigning in today – despite internal polling that shows him losing the farming state.

‘Joe Biden thought that China was not a competitor of ours. Joe Biden is a dummy,’ he said. ‘China is a major competitor.’

Trump said, ‘China ate our country alive during Obama and Biden. They ate us alive. And then, Biden has some kind of relationship financially, or his son, with China? Tell me about that? Because China ate the United States alive economically, and it’s a shame.’

‘The best thing that ever happened to the farmers is me. We gave $16 billion to the farmers to make up for the deficit with China,’ he said. ‘The farmers are my best friend. Nobody has treated the farmers better than Donald Trump.’

Biden said at a previous event in Iowa that China ‘is not competition’ to the United States and shouldn’t be viewed as such.

As Biden delivered remarks in Ottumwa, Iowa, on Tuesday, after Trump unleashed his fury on him, the candidate changed his tune.

He claimed that China is ‘in some ways’ a ‘real threat’ but Trump takes the argument too far.

‘China poses real challenges to the United States. And in some ways, a real threat to the United States. But Donald Trump is only exacerbating the threat and the danger,’ he said.

As he stepped up his own assault on China, Biden claimed that Trump had backed Beijing, because he realized it was costing him support in the Rust Belt.

‘He thinks he’s being tough. Well, it’s really easy to be tough when someone else absorbs the pain,’ Biden said.

Biden waited to speak until Trump was safely aboard Air Force One. But the president effectively beat him to the punch, undercutting Biden’s measured remarks with a furious response.

‘Well, I heard Biden, who’s a loser – look, Joe never got more than 1 per cent except Obama took him off the trash heap and now it looks like he’s failing,’ the president said.

‘It looks like his friends from the left are going to overtake him pretty soon, but I heard, you know, his whole campaign is to hit Trump,’ he added, in a nod to Bernie Sanders’ and Elizabeth Warren’s rising poll numbers.

The former vice president hit back at Trump as he spoke to reporters later in Iowa

‘I think I’m either low IQ or slow—I don’t know what I am. Slow Joe Biden? Give me a break,’ Biden said. ‘This is like out of Alice in Wonderland.’

Trump calls Biden ‘Sleepy Joe.’ He used the derogatory nickname at an official, White House event on Tuesday in Council Bluffs.

‘America must never again be held hostage to foreign suppliers of energy, as we were under the Obama-Biden “Sleepy Joe” group. Sleepy Joe,’ he said.  ‘Sleepy guy.’

Trump brought up Biden twice in his official remarks, claiming the Democrat would let other countries push America around.

‘Under the Obama administration, our politicians let other countries push us around, treat us badly, treat our country with no respect. And you see that with Biden. We would never be treated with respect, because people don’t respect him,’ he said.

Pitting Democrats against one another, he said, ‘Even the people that he’s running against. They’re saying, “Where is he? What happened?” He makes his stance in Iowa every two weeks, and then he mentions my name 74 times in once speech.

‘That reminds me of Crooked Hillary. She did the same thing,’ the president said, pausing for applause. ‘And then when it came time to vote, they all said, “You know, she doesn’t like Trump very much, but what else does she stand for?”

He assessed, ‘Same thing’s happening with Sleepy Joe. He’s a sleepy guy.’

As he talked about China’s ‘chronic trade abuses’ the sitting president said he’s addressing,’ he invoked the ‘Obama-Biden’ administration.

‘Somebody had to say no more. And Obama-Biden didn’t say it. They just let it happen. And in all fairness, so did other presidents. We’re stopping it. It’s stopped.’

Trump’s own poll numbers have been struggling compared to Biden’s in a general election scenario in critical states.

The New York Times reported Monday that Trump instructed aides to deny he performed poorly in campaign surveys of swing states. A senior campaign official told that staffers have never been asked to lie.

And the president denied that he’d been untruthful about his level of support.

‘I never do. My poll numbers are great. The amazing thing is all I do is get hit by this phony witch hunt,’ he told a journalist a the White House who asked if he ordered staffers to lie.

The president insisted they are ‘fake polls,’ and he’s doing just fine in states likes Iowa, Pennsylvania and Texas. He said he’d prefer to run against Biden than anyone else in the large field of Democrats.

‘No, I would rather run against, I think, Biden than anybody. I think he’s the weakest mentally, and I like running against people that are weak mentally. I think Joe is the weakest up here. The other ones have much more energy,’ he said. ‘I don’t agree with their policies, but I think Joe is a man who would – I call him 1 percent Joe because until Obama came along he didn’t do very well. But look, look – but I don’t bring him up.’

A new Quinnipiac University poll supports Trump’s claim that Biden is slipping. Biden has dropped eight points nationally since he entered the race. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Warren are meanwhile on the rise and polled at 19 percent and 15 percent respectively with national Democrats.

But the national poll that published after Trump’s remarks indicated the sitting president would do worse against Biden than any other leading Democrat.

Biden polls ahead of Trump 53 – 40 percent; Sanders beats Trump 51 – 42 percent.

California Sen. Kamala Harris and Warren are preferred by 49 percent of voters in the survey. In that scenario Trump polls at 41 percent and 42 percent.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker do nearly as well, as their opponents, attracting 47 percent of voters to Trump’s 42 percent.

Biden still leads nationally, and in Iowa, where he’s attracting 24 percent of Democrats, in a new Des Moines Register survey.

Despite performing well in the polls, Biden dismissed surveys Iowa voters in his Tuesday speech.

‘They don’t mean anything right now. This is a marathon. This is a marathon, and it’s just beginning,’ he said as he finished the Ottumwa event.
