Woman reveals she bought a condolence card after she mistakenly thought her date’s pet bat had died

Singletons have shared most awkward date experiences – including one woman who brought along a condolence card after a mix-up over texts.

Holly Shortall, who is Irish but lives in Manchester, explained she had received a message from a man apologising for the delay in replying because ‘his bat had died’.

Thinking he meant his beloved pat had passed away, Holly gave him a card and a present – only later to discover that he meant his phone battery had died.

It was one of a number of toe-curling stories shared on Twitter after a user named Barty, believed to be from the US, posted about her own embarrassing experience and asked to hear others.

She said: ‘what’s the weirdest date you’ve been on??? I’ll go first we were going to see a movie and didn’t buy tickets in advance and couldn’t get two tickets next to each other so we ended up sitting on opposite sides of the theater and then the movie ended and we were like cool ok bye.’

The tweet racked up more than 500,000 likes and thousands of replies.

One wrote: ‘I once went to junkyard golf with a guy and halfway into a game he said the neon lights were giving him a migraine, he said he was going outside for air and literally just never came back. safe to say i won the game.’

Another added: ‘He brought his ex with him on the date then later told me she didn’t like my personality LOL.’

A third shared: ‘Guy i was seeing made me walk to KFC with him, he got chicken wings, ate them & threw the bones in the road. When we got back, he made eggs in my kitchen without asking & farted in my bed.’

Others shared uncomfortable tales of meeting people through work, or sharing dinner with potential suitors who didn’t eat.

One tweeted: ‘Omg I went on a date with a surgeon that I met through work & he took me to Wasabi & didn’t eat himself but watched me eat, then followed my car home with his lights off in the dark.. thinking I wouldn’t notice..then texted me asking if I got home safe yet he saw me get home.’

Another added: ‘Met him the first time and he was alright. I wasn’t super in to him but I gave him a shot and saw him again a second time. This time he called his dad on speaker phone while I was sitting there to tell him he met a girl. I felt weird because I barely knew him.’
